Academic Writing

Role of this Course

Academic writing is a skill which takes time to develop and needs regular practice. The course introduces students to proper essay writing, fundamentals of grammar and punctuation, and other essential writing skills. The writing lessons taught in this course can be applied to all writing assignments within both a senior high school and university program.

Course Philosophy

This course will place emphasis not only on how to say something, i.e. style, but what you say, i.e. substance. It is taught through student’s active engagement in the writing process. One’s writing improves by writing and then receiving feedback that can be profitably used in future writing exercises. This practical approach is important as students who have actively engaged in a writing activity learn faster than and can more readily adopt the ideas being taught to them than those who are simply lectured at.

Learning outcomes:

    Individual Study Plan

We’ll start by talking to determine just what you would like to achieve from the lessons. From this we’ll create an Individual Study Plan. This will be an outline of our starting point and what we aim to achieve from the lessons, with measurable targets going forward. It will also include your study timetable, designed to fit your schedule and timescale.

    Resources

All resources are provided by me. The course will be tailored to your specific needs, so it’s likely we will be dipping into a variety of different sources, both online and paper-based.

I strongly recommend that you study on a laptop rather than a mobile, and that you save your work into folders. I can help you with this if needed. I’ll also recommend good sources of sites with practice resources, which we will be using as self-study between lessons.
